A quick-thinking passerby pulled a man from the fiery wreckage of his car Sunday afternoon after a rollover crash on a highway ramp in Wareham, State Police said.

The victim, who was not identified, was driving an Audi A4 on the on ramp from Route 495 to Route 195 when the car went over the guardrail and burst into flames, Trooper Matthew Guarino said.

A passing driver managed to pull the victim out of the vehicle before emergency services arrived, he said. The identity of the good Samaritan was unknown. Guarino added that investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash.

The victim was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He was the only person in the vehicle.

A second rollover accident occurred Sunday evening just before 8 p.m. in Leominster, leaving two men seriously injured.

Their Toyota Echo rolled over on the ramp from Interstate 190 to Route 2, ejecting the driver from the car and leaving the passenger trapped inside, according to Guarino.

The driver, a 22-year-old Fitchurg man, suffered life-threatening injuries. However, it was believed that he would survive, Guarino said.

The passenger, a 22-year-old from Ayer, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Both were transported by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Guarino said that initial findings indicated the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
